OT: Teeth Whitening ?

Question:

Got a nice generous bonus from a client and I've decided to spend some of it on getting my teeth whitened. Now my dilemma is whether to go with the one-hour (i.e., BriteSmile) routine or the dentist's office (making up trays, using the gel, having the ability to redo the procedure prn). Anybody have any first-hand experience?

Answer: Yeah... I'll ask DH which is better, but I know that he will say that neither is best. He isn't much into whitening because it weakens the enamel. He will do it for whoever wants it, but he advises about it. All of our kids have done/do it. I do think you can go too far and have very unnatural appearing teeth. But some people definite benefit from its use (cosmetically)

Having watched matches being made for color for crowns, etc., no one would like to think their teeth match THAT! But I have to say on TV too white doesn't seem a problem. And do black people really have really white teeth or is it simply the contrast between the tooth color and the skin color?

Both of my daughters use an OTC teeth whitening product that they put on at night while they sleep. Their teeth are beautifully white. I think it took about a week to get maximum results and now they do it about once a week.

Do they use Crest Night Strips? I got my daughter the White Strips the other day, and she had a problem with them coming off. Do you think the Night Strips would work better?

I have a real good friend who is a dental hygienist and she recommends the Brite Smile (I thought that was the laser one done in the dentist's office). She says the results are amazing. Also, because I smoke, and she said I shouldn't waste my money on the expensive treatment until I quit (even though my teeth are fairly good and not yellow) she gave me the Rembrandt Whitening system which has these little mouth things that you fill with a gel and bite down on for 30 seconds to a minute or something like that. It is a pretty easy thing and works pretty well (as I have used that).

Consumer Reports just did new ratings on OTC teeth whiteners. Colgate White Nights came in first as the best whitener. I've tried the Crest strips but they really didn't make much of a difference, so I'm going to try the Colgate next.
