Gums swelling one week after root canal ?

Question:

My wife had a root canal in a molar eight days ago by an endodontist recommended by our dentist. The root canal was due to a resorption issue. No know cause for this.

She has not been in severe pain but has complained that the tooth feels different. This is in line with what the endodontist told her to expect. Yesterday she noticed swelling in the gums by the tooth. No pain but she is now worried about it. Its the weekend and we hesitate to call the emergency number so I'm asking the dentists who hang out here. Do we need to call the emergency number or can it wait til monday since there is no pain? Is this a sign of infection?

Answer:

Could be infection. Have her rinse with warm salt water, 1/2 tsp/8 oz. water to promote drainage. If the swelling is any worse by morning, call the emergency number. Let them decide if it's worth seeing. Probably not urgent if drainage is achieved. Resorption cases are tough--infection has to be considered.
