Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Oral Surgeon?

Question:

I'm a 57-yr. old male who's been advised to have two wisdom teeth extracted by current dentist - a guy about 10 mos. out of Tufts Univ. Dental School. According to him "straightforward extractions."

Originally I panned the very idea since the w-teeth were not troubling me. Now, however, I've noticed the top right one is exerting contact irritation on lower exposed gum. (There is about a half-inch overhang)

Question: Should I let him do it, or opt for a more experienced oral surgeon? I'm especially worried about:

i) nerve damage (permanent) or damage to adjacent crowns/teeth ii) anesthesia side effects (I'm VERY drug sensitive and had a bad reacton a few years ago just to *sedative* drugs administered during a colonoscopy)

Also, this guy has gone into none of the risks, possible complications entailed - which evidently (from what I've gleaned on the web) are quite real for 50+ year olds.

Answer:

HAve him reduce the offending cusps with a drill and let it go...

This is just a possible option but not advice because I have not examined you.....

How are you with novacaine? I got my teeth pulled with just novacaine because my parents were worried about the anaesthesia..

Novacaine is no problem. But did you have it done with wisdom teeth or regular? Also, how old were you?

I understand the extraction can be more difficult and longer fot older pts. (from 1.5-2 hrs).

Nah, its unpredictable! I always say NOTHING about ease or difficulty beforehand. My usual extraction takes 5 minutes. I have done many many thousands of them!
