Question:
I have suffered from gum disease for many years. A decade ago, I had
orthodontal and bridge work. Despite frequent flossing, etc. I now
notice a return of the gum problem.
I recently heard of a new treatment for such problems which involves
application of what I believe to be an antibiotic cream. Does anyone
know of such a treatment?
Answer:
there are new treatments available that apply a material into the space between
your teeth and your gums, that contain antibacterial properties. however,
these are not for home use -- they must be applied by a dentist or specialist.
i'm not sure whether they can be placed by a hygienist or not.......that would
probably depend upon the regulations/laws/statutes in your particular area, but
my guess is no.
some brand names for you to check into or ask about are PerioChip and Atridox
Placement of Atridox and periochips can be delegated to hygienists in many states.
As noted these procedures are not self applied. Usually these procedures are done
after a
scaling and root planing treatment or at a maintenance appointment if active
disease is
discovered.
There is also an oral medication which can be prescribed by your dentist if s/he
feels it can help your condition.
The most important thing you can do to prevent loss of gingival attachment is 3 to
4 month
maintenance appointments with your dentist or hygienist.
