Question:
My son is 2 years old and started grinding his while he is sleeping. What
can I do to stop this?
Answer:
Here is a possible explanation
Usually the grinding seen in young children is self-limiting. We rarely
treat this condition and there seems to be no generally accepted
treatment. In very severe cases the use of a soft bite-splint has been
recommended. Most children "outgrow" this problem.
I have seen some posts in various related newsgroups that associate
grinding with parasites and worms. This is a rather "exotic" explanation
and definitely not on the top of the list of possible etiologies.
Children with enlarged adenoids may grind their teeth at night. And it may
be an aspect of mouth breathing. Ask your doctor about some of the
suggestions for reducing enlarged adenoids and improving breathing at my
