Question:
Can anybody help me??????
I guess I have a tendancy to grind my teeth when I sleep and my girlfriend
will hit me and wake me up so I stop, and I dont know I do, I guss.. I
have noticed that the inside of my cheek may also get a little chewed up
and I dont ever bite it so I must do it in my sleep, is there anything I can
do like wear a mouthpiece but still be able to breath or what is there
to do to cure such a thing........
Answer:
You can ask your dentist to make you a stabilisation splint, which
releaves the the tension on your muscles and prevents you from
grinding. After a period of time a selected therapy intra-orally can
be given tot prevent you from future grinding
"Nocturnal Bruxism", nightime grinding is well known to all dentists, and
your dentist can have a laboratory make a strong Nightguard or Biteplate
for you to wear at night. Made of strong acrylic, it is carved so you can
grind on it rather than on your teeth. This will 1) protect your teeth
from undue wear, 2) preserve your cheeks from trauma, 3) take much of the
stress off your jaw muscles and jaw joints (a common cause of "TMJ"
problems), and 4) STOP THAT NOISE!. Call your dentist tomorrow...
In regard to your question about grinding... yes there is a mouthpiece you
can wear called a night guard or splint. It looks a little like an
orthodontic retainer, fits over the upper teeth with a flat surface that
your lower teeth contact when you bite . At night your grinding which is
fairly common in many people will be against the splint and not your
teeth. There are many different variations of this device but this is the
one that seems to work for us.
Possibly a new girlfriend? What is she bitching about? Or does she have
something to bitch about?? If you gave it to her every night, maybe she
would be tired enough to get some sleep.
