Question:
I am looking for different opinions about dog teeth cleaning. I have found a
wide range of prices:
120-130.00 USD This price includes a technician cleaning the teeth with the
dog under general anesthesia.
500-550.00 USD This price includes a technician cleaning the teeth with the
dog under general anesthesia. The price also includes the vet examining each
tooth, IV fluids for a safer surgery, X-rays, electrocardiogram, some other
tests, and a pre-op physical examination and blood work.
If you paid the higher price, were you happy with the results and did you
think the price was well-worth it for the health of your dog?
Answer:
Don't really have an answer for you, however, when growing up and we had six
black labs - all we ever did was give them a bone to chew on and then use a
regular old human tooth brush every once in a while - they didn't like it
(the tooth brushing) but it sure did mitigate the dog breath....if only for
a little while : )
What breed and age is your dog?
Is there anything published about your specific breed's sensitivity to
anesthesia?
Spending $550.00 on a dog's dental care is unusual to me, although I
understand many people are willing to pay for these high priced protocols.
Still, there are no guarantees when it comes to anesthesia. I would ask
for a preventative course of antibiotics for before and after the cleaning.
It has been several(7) years since we had canids that required teeth
cleaning, but I do not recall paying more than $100.00 and they came
out fine.
Just my personal opinion:
I've had surgery with nothing more than blood work and had no problems.
I would have a problem paying more for my dog's dental cleaning than I
do for my own, at least until I get to Hollywood.
I have trouble paying that much too. :) The dog is about 6-7 years
old. We're not sure of the age because she was a stray. Her teeth are pretty
bad; many are broken off.
